Jessica Mauboy

Jessica Hilda Mauboy is an Australian R&B and pop singer, songwriter, and actress.

Biography

Jessica Hilda Mauboy was born on 4 August 1989 and raised in DarwinNorthern Territory. Her father, Ferdi, is an electrician who came from West Timor, and her mother, Therese, is an Indigenous Australian. Jessica’s mother is from the indigenous Kuku Yalanji people in the rainforest regions ofFar North Queensland. Jessica has three older sisters Sandra, Jenny and Catherine, and a younger sister Sophia. From an early age, she was involved in the local church choir with her grandmother Harriett. Her home was described as the “noisiest house on the block”, with her mother often singing, her father playing guitar and the rest of the family showing their love for music. Jessica attended Wulagi Primary School and Sanderson High School in Darwin. She dropped out of school in year 11. 

At the age of fourteen, Jessica entered the Telstra Road to Tamworth competition at the 2004 Tamworth Country Music Festival in TamworthNew South Wales. As the first winner of the competition, Jessica travelled to Sydney to perform.  She then released a country-inspired rendition of theCyndi Lauper‘s hit “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun“.A video for her version of the song was made but the song went nowhere and Mauboy went home to Darwin.

  In 2006, Jessica was the runner-up on the fourth season of Australian Idol; she had auditioned for the talent show in Alice Springs, Northern Territory to pursue a recording career. Mauboy then signed a contract with Sony Music Australia.
